HE THOUGHT THAT was a test, and he was determined not to fail. He’d stay awake the rest of the night, rather than have Sieur Anton rouse him again. But the knight blew the candle out and the darkness drew Marron down into itself, and thence into sluggish, difficult dreams that held him in confusion until a deep thrumming sound shook him free.

This time he knew exactly where he was. Where and when, because that was Frater Susurrus calling again; which meant that the sun was creeping up over the horizon, and there was no time for him to creep for all that his body yearned to …

He threw off the furs that covered him so warmly, such rare comfort; the brothers are actively forbidden any comfort, he remembered, and wondered if he would have to confess this too. No time for panic either, though. Not now, not yet. He rolled to his feet and ran the width of the chamber, three quick paces to Sieur Anton’s bedside.

The knight’s eyes were open and clear, he was wide awake. Marron felt a stab of guilt, of failure; but Sieur Anton only smiled, and said, “Yes, boy?”

“Sieur, the bell, the dawn bell…”

“Ah. Thank you,” for all the world as though he hadn’t heard or felt it himself. He rose gracefully from his bed, knelt and gestured for Marron to join him. “This time try to keep your thoughts on what we do, boy.”

“Yes, sieur.”

And he did, he managed that more or less, despite his fears for the day. Sieur Anton’s soft voice was a guide this morning, drawing his attention back to the God each time it threatened to wander.
